* Hbc provides extensive support to the Manitoba Museum and the Archives of Manitoba to assist in the preservation of our archives and artifacts.
Imagine is Canada’s national program to promote public and corporate giving and support for the community. Hbc is recognized as an “Imagine Caring Company,” which means we are committed to giving a minimum of 1 percent of our pre-tax profit to charity, encouraging associate giving and volunteering, providing our customers with a way to give back to local and national charities, and working with suppliers whose businesses are ethically and environmentally sound.
Hbc’s Athlete Program
“The Hbc bursary will help me spend more time training and less time working to finance it,” says Danielle of the $5,000 bursary she received from Hbc. “It also affords me the time to invest in my community, to help develop the next generation of athletes.” – Danielle Peers, Paralympian
The Hbc Foundation’s goal is to raise $20 million over a period of seven years to support our athletes through various corporate and in-store initiatives. Among the recipients of this funding are the athletes themselves. Each year, the Hbc Foundation donates a $5,000 bursary to 200 of our most promising young athletes set to compete at the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. The remaining proceeds are invested in Canada’s sports organizations and national training centres.

For 2006, the Hbc Foundation developed five key fundraising programs to meet its commitment to athletes:
- Hbc Run for Canada – $1.5 million
-
Hbc organizes this exciting family event, which features a 10-kilometre run, three-kilometre walk and a one-kilometre kids run. In 2006, the event took place at these locales:
- Victoria, British Columbia
- Vancouver, British Columbia
- Calgary, Alberta
- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
- Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Toronto, Ontario
- Algonquin Park, Ontario
- Ottawa, Ontario
- Montreal, Quebec
- Halifax, Nova Scotia
To help reach Hbc’s fundraising target, each Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and Designer Depot store was challenged to raise $5,000. Stores met this goal by both encouraging customer participation and staging local fundraisers. During the month leading up to the run, stores also sold Loonie Cut-Outs, which customers could purchase and sign for one dollar.
To help raise local awareness, each Hbc store was partnered with one of Hbc’s 200 funded athletes. The stores were then encouraged to invite athletes to make a store appearance.
Thanks to the support of customers, associates, athletes, partners and friends, the event welcomed almost 9,000 participants and 1,600 volunteers.
- Inspirational Cut-Out Program – $887,324
-
For a donation of two dollars, customers could purchase a postcard cut-out to write a message to athletes competing on the world stage. The cut-outs were delivered to Turin, Italy (Olympics and Paralympics) and Melbourne, Australia (Commonwealth Games) and posted in the athlete villages, so that Canadian athletes could read our proud messages of support.
- Hbc Foundation Golf Tournament and Spa – $400,000
-
One of the largest golf tournament fundraisers in Canada, this annual event took place at four golf courses with over 700 participants.
- Charity T-Shirt and Donate Your Hbc Rewards Points Program – $186,904
-
Hbc stores across Canada sold a limited edition charity T-shirt designed by our Canadian Olympic design team, with 100 percent of the net proceeds going to benefit Canadian athletes. Hbc customers were also invited to donate their Hbc Rewards Points.
National Partnerships
Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF)
Since 1985, Hbc and its associates have been loyal friends to the cystic fibrosis cause, committing more than $25 million to help find a cure or an effective control for the disease.
Annually, Hbc is proud to support Shinerama, the CCFF’s largest post-secondary fundraising campaign involving first-year students from 57 universities and colleges across Canada. In addition, Hbc is the incentive prize and volunteer appreciation sponsor of the Foundation’s Great Strides™ walkathon, as well as the presenting sponsor for a number of fundraising galas in key urban centres.
Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
Once again, Hbc was proud to launch its Think Pink™ campaign in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The campaign invited customers to donate their Hbc Rewards Points to the cause. As well, all Hbc stores and Hbc.com sold a selection of pink products offered by Hbc vendors, in addition to two signature items exclusive to Hbc: a pink toque and pink Hbc Signature blanket. These activities raised over $400,000.
Canadian Women’s Foundation
Since 2001, Hbc has donated more than $1.2 million to support the Hbc Violence Prevention Fund, a program distributing grants to local shelters for abused women, sexual assault centres and other organizations working to prevent violence. Each Hbc store is matched with a women’s shelter in its community. Stores present shelters with Hbc gift cards twice a year, and often provide meeting space, or opportunities for the shelter to fundraise or raise awareness on-site.
Canadian Red Cross
Hbc has been a national sponsor of the Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Program since 2004, raising awareness of proper babysitting skills through information available in stores and offering monetary support. Hbc also sponsors the National Hbc Babysitter Hero Award, recognizing youth who exemplify great babysitting.
In 2006, Hbc was able to donate almost $45,000 to support the CRC’s Middle East Crisis campaign. Funds were raised through a Donate Your Hbc Reward Points program.
National Historica Fairs:
The Historica Fairs is a program designed to encourage students from grades four to nine to explore Canadian heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. As a sponsor of both provincial and national fairs, Hbc provides in-kind donations and presents the winners of the Hbc Explorers Award with prizes.
Canada Day Poster Challenge
Hbc is a national prize sponsor of the Canada Day Poster Challenge, a program run by the Ministry of Canadian Heritage to encourage students aged 18 and under to design a poster that illustrates what Canada means to them. Finalists are selected from each province and then the winner is flown to Ottawa to be presented with a special award on Parliament Hill on Canada Day.
Safe Kids Canada
In partnership with The Hospital for Sick Children, Hbc sponsors Kids that Click, an educational program to assist parents and caregivers when buying and using a car or booster seat.
Look Good Feel Better
Each year, Hbc sponsors the Look Good Feel Better ball, which raises funds to help women living with cancer manage the appearance-related side effects of the disease and its treatment. Bay stores from coast to coast also hold cosmetic fundraising galas throughout the year, while Bay associates often donate their time to teach a Look Good Feel Better make-up application for cancer survivors. In 2006, Hbc donated over $210,000 to this worthwhile charity.
