Hudson’s Bay Company partners with PACIFIC INSTITUTE FOR SPORT EXCELLENCE to launch a 2010 Winter Games Program in Victoria

May 2, 2009 (Victoria, BC):  At a community celebration today at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE), Hudson’s Bay Company kicked off its Canada-wide program to help spread the Olympic Spirit across the country and to engage Canadians in support of our athletes. As part of the ceremony, Hudson’s Bay Company was recognized for its financial commitment to PISE and Canadian athletes with a renaming of the welcome plaza of the campus.

“This world-class facility is a stunning example of the expertise and advancements necessary to support Canadian athletes,” said Jeff Sherman, CEO, Hudson’s Bay Company. “We’re committed to helping Canadian athletes achieve their personal and podium goals and to be competitive on the world stage, so it’s an honour to have a permanent home for Hudson’s Bay Company on this campus.”

Today’s event included a pick up street hockey game with Torino 2006 Wheelchair Curling Gold Medalist Gary Cormack and Salt Lake City 2002 Freestyle Skiing Bronze Medalist Deidra Dionne and included prizes as well as opportunities to enter to win tickets for events at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

“We are thrilled to have such a prestigious company as the Hudson’s Bay Company supporting the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, the first sport training institute in Canada,” said Jim Reed, chair of the board, Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. “This is a natural fit for a company who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to excellence in sport and community participation throughout Canada for many years. Hudson’s Bay Company’s involvement reinforces our mission and the Institute’s crucial role in the Canadian sport system and support for our finest athletes.”

“This is the kick off to a summer of Olympic Spirit. You can watch for more of these hockey games to pop up at locations across the country,” said Sherman. “Hudson’s Bay Company is proud to be a National Partner of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and we want to share that national pride with all of Canada. These street hockey events will help generate excitement about the 2010 Winter Games and they’re a great way to get to know our Olympic hopefuls, meet them in person and really show our support for them.”

“Making it to the podium takes a lot of hard work, access to the very best coaching and training and corporate partners like Hudson’s Bay Company,” said Salt Lake City 2002 Freestyle Skiing Bronze Medalist Deidra Dionne. “It’s really exciting to be here today, to feel all this encouragement from the community. I can’t wait for 2010.”
