Hudson’s Bay Company celebrates International Olympic Day

June 23, 2009 (Winnipeg, MB):  Hundreds of Hudson’s Bay Company customers, associates and friends showed their Olympic Spirit today at a community celebration to mark International Olympic Day. Held at The Bay – St. Vital, the afternoon included a cheque presentation of $2010 to the Winnipeg Speed Skating Club, and guests had the opportunity to meet Canadian National Speed Skating Team members Brittany Schussler and Mike Ireland, both from Winnipeg.

“Hudson’s Bay Company is proud to be a National Partner of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and we’re committed to supporting Canada’s amateur athletes. It’s an honour to be able to share that with the Winnipeg Speed Skating Club, and I hope the young athletes watching Brittany and Mike will be inspired to strive for their own Olympic gold,” said Liz Bauman, Regional Marketing Manager, the Bay.

Today’s event included a pick up street hockey game with the Vancouver 2010 Mascots, a BBQ and prizes as well as an opportunity to enter to win a prize package to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Hudson’s Bay Company is hosting similar community celebrations across the country this summer to help generate Olympic Spirit and offer Canadians the opportunity to meet our 2010 hopefuls.

“Making it to the podium means having access to the very best coaching and training and corporate partners like Hudson’s Bay Company,” said Schussler. “That support has recently helped me move to Richmond, BC where I’m training on the new Olympic Speed Skating Oval, which could be a big edge in Olympic competition.”

“It takes such focus and financial commitment to be a world-class athlete. Support from Hudson’s Bay Company means I can concentrate on my training and research the very best blades and equipment for competition,” said Ireland. “My goal is gold in 2010.”

Hudson’s Bay Company is a Premier National Partner and the General Retail Merchant of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. In partnership with VANOC, the company is designing and manufacturing the official uniforms for the 30,000-person Games-time workforce; it will also be outfitting the athletes' villages, in both Vancouver and Whistler, with quality products to make the athletes comfortable in 2010.
