Zellers Will Get You in the Mood for Freaky Friday

Zellers Will Get You in the Mood for Freaky Friday

With Halloween Landing on Friday Whole Families are Getting in on the Fun

TORONTO, October 16, 2008-Don’t let the 31st creep up and frighten you this year. Whether you’re into trick or treating, partying or decorating, Zellers has all you need to get you in the Halloween spirit.

This year’s big screen hits Batman, Ironman and the Hulk have little boys dying to get their hands on superhero costumes.Hanna Montana and High School Musical are the celebrity favourites amongst girls. If your child chooses not to go for this year’s trends they can opt for traditional costumes. Princess costumes, starting at $19.99 never fail for little girls and Draculas and monsters are still perfect for boys.

Halloween is not just for kids anymore. More adults are dressing up and joining the spook fest and this year you can finally be that character you always dreamed of.Zellers has a wide selection of cool adult costumes that will have your kids begging you to trick or treat with them.

“For teens the goulier, the gruesomer, the better,” says Melanie Szban, Zellers Halloween Buyer.Teens can find fake blood, make up as well as other horrifying accessories to add the finishing touches to their creepy costumes.

While dressing up your family, don’t forget your house. You will have the most haunted house on the block by decorating your yard with black cats, spiders and bats.Make sure you add that eerie touch by picking up a fog machine from Zellers for $24.99.Heads Up Harry, an animated doll who talks and pulls off his head will defiantly have people screaming as they pass your house. Jack-o-lanterns are fun but lit candles can be dangerous around children, especially with costumes. The Haunted Halls battery operated pumpkin is a safe and convenient alternative.

Halloween fun comes with Halloween safety.Health Canada has these recommendations on their website: add reflective tape or strips to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.Teach children their home phone numbers and 9-1-1 before they go out trick or treating. To encourage children not to eat candy before it can be checked by a parent, have a competition their siblings and friends: the child with the most amount of candy at the end of the night wins.Flashlights are not only great ways to see in the dark but can add to the Halloween aura when used to create spooky shapes.Halloween is fun but can be hazardous; talking to your child about safety is the best way to prevent accidents.

Waterloo Becomes Home to Canada’s First Green Bay Store

Waterloo Becomes Home to Canada’s First Green Bay Store

- Beautiful new Bay store designed to appeal to community’s growing affluence -

Waterloo, ON, September 17, 2008 – The ongoing success and growing affluence of Waterloo has prompted The Bay, a division of the Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc) to launch a beautiful new 120,000 square foot Bay store at Conestoga Mall. The new store, which is the first green Bay location in Canada, will open to the public on September 19th, 2008.

“Waterloo has become home to some of Canada’s leading entrepreneurs and most successful companies,” said Bonnie Brooks, President and CEO, The Bay.“Our new store provides people in Waterloo with an exciting shopping experience, as well as appealing to the community’s environmentally progressive nature through unique green initiatives like solar panels, wind turbines, energy efficient lighting and even recyclable carpet.”

Among the store’s many green innovations are:

Special energy efficient lighting inside and out – LED exterior signage lights, which uses 10 percent of the energy required for conventional lighting; Fluorescent lighting uses energy efficient T8 and T5 ballast which save energy and reduce cooling loads while providing same lighting quality within the store.

High efficiency roof top units use ozone friendly R410A refrigerant.

Accent lighting uses highly efficient Metal Halide light fixtures.

Solar panels mounted on the front of the store enabling the store to draw less power from the local grid.

Two wind turbines, which will generate enough electricity to offset the power consumption of an average home.

White TPO roofing to reflect heat and reduce thermal islanding; the cooler roof reduces the need for air conditioning and is recyclable at end of life.

Waterless urinals and touchless water faucets and toilets for water conservation.

Carpet tile is recyclable.

What’s Old is New

Zellers Introduces Eco-friendly supplies for Back to School

TORONTO, August 25, 2008-Back to school has been revamped this year with the launch of eco-friendly school supplies from Zellers for earth conscious kids who want to save the planet. “What’s old is truly new at Zellers,” says Salwa Steitieh, Zellers’ stationary buyer. “By using post-consumer waste to create fun new products for back to school, Zellers is continuing to be eco-friendly and is providing kids with the means to be socially conscious.”

The eco-friendly line of school supplies consist of a variety of products from pens to water bottles. The products include recycled paper that is 100% recycled with 40% post consumer waste. The subject notebooks for grades 1 and 3 have moisture resistant Press Guard recycled covers, perforated sheets that are 50% recycled and are only 30% post consumer waste plus their funky new designs make them both eco-friendly and trendy. Retractable pens available in blue, red, and black contain 81% post-consumer content including cassette tape reels, car headlights, cd’s, and car battery cases.

Finally, little eco warriors can carry their entire new eco-friendly school supply collection home in an eco-tote. The totes are made from 51% Polyethylene Terephtalate (PET) material and come in a variety of stylish multicolored patterns. Kids are able to look cool, and be eco-friendly.

This initiative is an important part of the Hbc's broader sustainability program called Global Mind. Hbc is committed to ensuring its stores and operations are energy efficient and environmentally friendly through programs such as:

Zero waste - Hbc's corporate head office located in downtown Toronto is the first office tower in Canada to achieve the 'zero waste' designation; two other home office locations are also now zero waste and a further 40 stores will be converted in 2008.

In November 2007, Zellers opened its greenest store yet: the 120, 000 square foot store in Waterdown, Ontario has wind turbines and solar panels, a white roof to reflect heat and other water and energy conservation features. Zellers will introduce wind turbines and green energy in as many as five new stores in 2008.

Enwave deep cooling - In 2005, Hbc was the first retailer to embrace green energy. By converting its one-million-square-foot QueenStreetBay to green energy for air conditioning, the new system uses 90 per cent less electricity than conventional chillers.

Sales of Canadian Olympic Replica Gear Double Since Start of Games

Toronto, ON, August 19, 2008 – Canadians are showing their support for Team Canada athletes in Beijing by purchasing Olympic replica wear.Hudson’s Bay Company (Hbc) today announced that sales of its Olympic merchandise have doubled since the start of the Beijing 2008 Games on August 8.

“We typically see sales of Olympic product take off once the Games begin,” said Donna Dimitropoulos, Merchandise Vice President, Hbc Olympics.“It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of the Games, and the easiest way for most of us to express our pride in our athletes, is to wear the Team Canada Olympic gear.”

In Canada, the top selling items include a variety of t-shirts: a short sleeve Canada t-shirt available in five colours, the Chinese script t-shirt, the Banner t-shirt with a Chinese tattoo-inspired print, and the Elements t-shirt. Rounding out the best sellers include the popover fleece ‘Canada’ hoody, the multifunctional B-Tube and the stylish tapestry hoody.

Hbc’s Olympic design team worked with Canadian Olympic athletes from across the country to design the collection. The collection meets fashion and functional needs with clothing that incorporates performance fabrics that provide UV protection, four way stretch, odor resistance, and wicking and cooling properties for ultimate comfort in Beijing’s climate. The clothing is also eco-friendly, using materials such as bamboo, cotton blends, cacona and organic cotton.

"I love the new uniforms, not only because we stand out from any other country but because they are very different from other Canadian uniforms we have had before,” said weightlifter Marilou Dozois-Provost. “I found them very comfortable, breathable, practical and environmentally friendly. I love how we look stylish in them."

Canada’s Olympic team members in Beijing each received 25 items, as part of the 2008 team package, including leisure wear, jackets, pants and shorts, hoodies, t-shirts, shoes and luggage. Most of the pieces will be available for sale as replica wear both in Bay and Zellers stores, online at www.hbc.com, and at Canada House and the BC Pavilion during the Beijing 2008 Games.

Hbc is the Official Clothing and Luggage Supplier to the Canadian Olympic team and the Official Department Store Partner and General Merchandise Retailer in Canada until 2012.The Hbc Foundation has also committed to raising $20 million dollars through 2012 to help fund our athletes, their training facilities and their national sports organizations. To date, the Company has already raised nearly $6 million toward its goal. Funds are raised on Canada Day at the Hbc Run for Canada in communities across the country and an annual charity golf tournament.

Canadian Athletes Unveil Official Parade Uniforms at

Internet Buzz Judges Canadian Uniforms ‘Best Dressed’

Toronto, Friday, August 8, 2008 – Canadian Olympians unveiled their official parade uniforms in the Parade of Nations at today’s Opening Ceremony in Beijing. The uniforms consist of a super lightweight athletic windbreaker featuring a Canada fusion print, coupled with an a-line skirt for women and club trouser for men.

“Hbc has a long history of supporting the Canadian Olympic Movement and athletes,” says Jeffrey Sherman, Hbc President and CEO. “We are proud to dress them for their debut at the Games and to financially support them in getting there.”

The pieces use a state-of-the-art "Sublimation" printing technique, a gradation of Maple Leafs layered over a graphic 8 all over pattern. Each windbreaker has a large Maple Leaf printed on the back body and “CANADA” bamboo-inspired script stacked vertically on the front as homage to Chinese calligraphy.

“Our athletes were thrilled with their uniforms during Outfitting this week and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from other athletes in the Olympic village,” says Tu Ly, Hbc Olympic Apparel designer. “The Canadian team uniforms have already been rated as best-dressed by Internet bloggers in the days leading up to the Games.”

The designs for parade wear and the clothing designed for the medal podium are athlete-only pieces not available for sale to the public. The latest Olympic collection is a highly-styled fusion of Canadian and Chinese symbolism.“Canada” is proudly written in both English and Chinese and the Maple Leaf is used on select items. The primary colours for the collection are hometown red and white.

Hbc’s Olympic design team worked with high-performance athletes from across Canada to design the collection. The collection meets fashion and functional needs with clothing that incorporates performance fabrics that provide UV protection, four-way stretch, odour resistance, and wicking and cooling properties for ultimate comfort in Beijing’s expected hot conditions. The clothing is also eco-friendly, using materials such as bamboo, cotton blends, cacona and organic cotton.

NRDC EQUITY PARTNERS ANNOUNCES THE ACQUISITION OF HUDSON’S BAY COMPANY

Combines Hudson’s Bay Company, Lord & Taylor, Fortunoff and Creative Design Studios under The Hudson’s Bay Trading Company

Toronto, CANADA and NewYork, USA -- July 16, 2008: NRDC Equity Partners and True North Retail Investments, an affiliate of The InterTech Group, Inc. and the owner of Hudson’s Bay Company (Hbc), announced today the completion of a transaction in which NRDC Equity Partners acquired Hbc and consolidated its ownership of Lord & Taylor, Fortunoff, and Creative Design Studios (CDS) under a holding company called the Hudson’s Bay Trading Company (HBTC). Combined, these companies comprise more than US$8 billion in retail sales, 75,000 employees, and 55 million square feet of stores in the United States and Canada. Hudson’s Bay Company, established in 1670, is North America’s oldest continually operating company.

NRDC Equity Partners is investing US$500 million in new equity into the combined company. Richard Baker will serve as CEO of the Hudson’s Bay Trading Company and will become the 38th Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. NRDC has been a minority owner in Hbc in partnership with the Zucker Family and Baker has been a member of the board since 2006.

Richard Baker said, “By acquiring Hudson’s Bay Company along with previous acquisitions Lord & Taylor and Fortunoff, we will have an unprecedented opportunity to recreate the retail landscape in North America. Enormous potential exists by upgrading the offerings at both The Bay and Zellers and by bringing Lord & Taylor, Fortunoff & CDS into the mix,” he added.

The strategy of the combined company is to create a greater focus on The Bay department store business in Canada with an emphasis on the customer by offering better brands and better service. In addition this acquisition will allow Canadian consumers to benefit from the following opportunities:

Lord & Taylor, an upscale specialty retailer in the U.S., will be in a position to launch 10 – 15 stores throughout Canada. Currently there is a gap in the Canadian retail landscape between The Bay department stores and Holt Renfrew. Lord & Taylor stores will be ideally positioned to fill this consumer demand and will be located in prime locations through existing Hbc real estate properties or within existing flagship Bay stores.

Zellers will see greater focus on branded apparel, improved customer service and a future roll out of new 125,000 square foot prototype stores.

Fortunoff, a specialty jewelry and home furnishings store, will be in a position to introduce Fortunoff Jewelry Stores and Fortunoff Home Departments both within The Bay department stores as well as free-standing retail operations.

Creative Design Studios, the design and manufacturing division, will expand its offerings and sell its branded collections throughout North America and internationally. CDS brands include Peter Som's eponymous collection as well as the Kate Hill and Context brands for women, and the Black Brown 1826 men's brand.

Fields, will continue to focus on delivering value-priced merchandise to Canadian consumers.

Home Outfitters, Canada’s fast growing home specialty store, will continue to offer customers unbeatable selection of brands and service in kitchen, bath and bed home furnishings.

Robert Johnston, President and CEO of Hbc and Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, The InterTech Group stated, “This transaction is a true win for all parties involved. The InterTech Group receives an excellent return on its investment, NRDC acquires an outstanding retailer with tremendous potential and the ability to leverage its brands and other properties into Canada, and Hbc employees will have the opportunity to build a dynamic new company.”

NRDC Equity Partners was founded by Bill Mack, Lee Neibart, and Robert and Richard Baker.

Robert Baker said, “The combined companies own a portfolio of trophy real estate assets that create spectacular opportunity for development around the existing retail operation.”

NRDC Equity Partners also announced the following executive appointments: Francis Casale will serve as Chief Financial Officer of HBTC; Donald Watros will serve as Chief Administration Officer of HBTC; and Brian Pall will serve as President of the HBTC Property Company.

NRDC Equity Partners was represented by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison, LLP as US legal counsel and Stikeman Elliott, LLP for Canadian counsel. Financo was the advisor for capital markets.

HBC UNVEILS GREENEST ZELLERS EVER

HBC UNVEILS GREENEST ZELLERS EVER

Waterdown, ON – November 30, 2007 – Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc) is pleased to announce the grand opening of its new 120,000 square foot Waterdown Zellers location on Saturday, December 1st. This location will be the greenest Zellers ever, featuring a variety of progressive elements that will minimize the store’s impact on the environment.

“The Waterdown Zellers store will be a ‘proving’ ground for eco-friendly initiatives that could be included in other Hbc stores in coming years,” said Robert Johnston, President, Hbc.“This is one of the many important green initiatives Hbc has undertaken in 2007 as part of our Global Mind program. We have also increased the number of our trucks using bio-diesel and undertaken Zero Waste programs at our head offices and seven stores.”

In recognition of the environmental significance of this new Zellers store, the Ontario Power Authority’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer, Peter Love, presented Hbc with a special certificate of recognition that will be placed in the store.

“HBC is the oldest company in Canada, and it has been part of our culture since the 1600s,” said Love. “How fitting that our oldest company has so completely embraced modern technology and practices to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. I applaud HBC for continuing to be a leader in Canada, and for doing so much to develop a culture of conservation.”

The sustainable building measures Hbc implemented in the Waterdown location include:

Two windmills, which will generate enough electricity to power a house.

Solar panels, which will power recycling compactors and help light the store.

A white roof which reflects and disperses heat.

Waterless urinals and touchless faucets, which will reduce water use.

ERV - energy recovery ventilators, which will help control air quality for customers and reduce the store’s demand for energy.

HVAC – heating, ventilating and air conditioning units, which use no ozone depleting refrigerants.

PRA - pressure relief assembly: to control air quality into the store.

The Waterdown Zellers features a fully automated energy management system that is controlled remotely by Hbc’s head office. The system allows for central control over the timing of indoor and outdoor lights, temperature control, CO2 reduction, humidity control, electricity consumption, remote lighting and more. This system allows Hbc to raise temperatures and reduce lighting levels in the store during heat waves in response to energy conservation requests by the Province of Ontario.

Efforts to ensure that the new Waterdown location will leave the smallest ecological footprint possible means that it will also benefit from:

Kitchen exhaust control to reduce energy consumption used by ventilating fans.

Exclusive use to green products for cleaning the store.

Return programs for rechargeable batteries and cell phones.

A program to take back plastic shopping bags and to promote the use of reusable ones.

Exterior signage is LED illuminated.

State of the art InterfaceFLOR covering (carpet) which is carbon neutral, with 40% recycled content and can be fully reclaimed.

“In addition to being a state of the art Zellers store with approximately 200 associates employed, it will also feature programs like plastic shopping bag and battery recycling, and an in-store Zero Waste program that will allow our associates and customers to take an active role in reducing the store’s environmental footprint,” said Kevin Hanoman, store manager.

The new Waterdown location also benefits from custom designed, color specific signage and photography aimed at making store navigation and searching for leading brands like Alfred Sung, Midtown, Sportek and Stuff by Hillary Duff a more intuitive customer experience. Waterdown will feature an updated, rustic take on the classic Zellers dinner, a neighbourhood market location with grocery items, and a new display concept that will showcase jewelry and accessories together in an easy to browse format.

The Zellers Waterdown location is an important part of the Hbc’s broader sustainability program called Global Mind. Hbc is committed to ensuring its stores and operations are energy efficient and environmentally friendly through programs such as:

Zero waste - Hbc’s corporate head office located in downtown Toronto is the first office tower in Canada to achieve the ‘zero waste’ designation.

Enwave deep cooling - In 2005, Hbc was the first retailer to embrace green energy. By converting its one-million-square-foot Queen Street Bay to green energy for air conditioning, the new system uses 90 per cent less electricity than conventional chillers.

Recycling at store level - In 2006, Zellers and Bay stores recycled 606 kg (1,333 lb) of rechargeable batteries and cell phones.

Eco-friendly products such as Truly Ultra Cold Water Laundry Detergent, ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and 100 per cent Organic Cotton house wares and apparel are available at the Bay and Zellers.

Hbc is Canada's largest diversified general merchandise retailer, operating in department store (the Bay), mass merchandise (Zellers), specialty (Home Outfitters and Designer Depot) and discount (Fields) formats. With more than 580 retail locations and nearly 70,000 associates located in every province in Canada, Hbc provides Canadians with stylish, quality merchandise at great value, through retail banners focused on exceptional customer service.
